From:衡阳党政门户网 | Date Add in:2025-05-09 17:07:22 [A  A]

Hengyang is a key city for religious affairs at the national level. It is characterized by the “four abundances”: First, comprehensive denominational diversity with substantial followers. Buddhism, Taoism, Catholicism, Protestantism, and Islam are all present, supported by 5 municipal-level and 11 county-level religious organizations; One religious institution: the Nanyue Kundao Class (Female Quanzhen Taoist Clergy Program) of China Taoist College. There are 560,000 religious adherents in the city, accounting for approximately 8% of the total population. Second, numerous religious professionals. There are 1,002 registered religious clergy members. Third, numerous religious venues. The city has 480 registered and certified religious sites. Among them, four are designated as nationally significant religious venues by the State Council, and fifteen are designated by the provincial government. Fourth, extensive international religious exchange. On the eve of the founding of the People’s Republic of China, dozens of seminarians from the Huangshawan Catholic Seminary moved to Taiwan. Today, they are distributed across Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, the United States, and Singapore. More than ten of them are still active clergy and maintain regular contact with the Catholic community in our city. Representatives of Hengyang's religious communities, particularly Buddhist and Taoist leaders, have conducted academic exchanges with counterparts in Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Singapore, thereby enhancing the city's international religious influence.
