Shigu Academy was named after its location on the Shigu Mountain north of Hengyang City, Hunan Province. It was originally the place where Li Kuanzhong, a scholar in the Tang Dynasty, built a studio, and later on in the Song Dynasty, became an academy, attracting many famous scholars and followers. Emperor Renzong of the Song Dynasty bestowed the land and the tablet bearing Shigu Academy on it, making the Academy highly reputed throughout the country. The original academy was destroyed in 1944 because of Japanese bombings. Today the Shigu Academy, the Shigu Park and some other buildings are rebuilt on the base of ruins.

Being fully aware of the necessity and importance of mass sports, the city is giving top priority to people`s health in developing the city`s sports. Competitive sports have been promoted in accordance with the requirements of the Outlook of Scientific Development. On one hand the city pays special attention to competitive sports and on the other hand it never overlooks the significance of national fitness. Sports in Hengyang date back to ancient times, and in our history folk sports such as swimming, martial arts, mountaineering, lion dancing, dragon boat racing and tug of war were very popular among the masses. The National Fitness Program Steering Committee of Hengyang city was founded in 1995 to supervise and guide the implementation of the National Fitness Program in our city. There are 807 health counseling centers of various types and more than 40 sports clubs in urban areas. According to the relevant statistics, the city enjoys 2303 sports venues with a total area of 4.12 million square meters. The area of public sports facilities per capita is 0.1 square meters in urban areas. In recent years the city has hosted sports competition six times at the international, national and provincial level and held annual large-scale public sports events more than 20 times. Positive results have been achieved both in competition and in spiritual civilization construction. Athletes from Hengyang won 3 gold medals at the Tenth National Games in 2005 and Hengyang was given the "Award for Outstanding Contributions to the Tenth National Games" by the provincial government. A large number of athletes from Henyyang have been selected into the provincial team, national team and later became top athletes. A case in this point is gymnast Li Jing, a three-gold-medal winner at the World Gymnastics Championships and a three-silver-medal winner in the 25^th Olympic Games.
