Amidst the scorching summer heat where the blazing sun seems capable of peeling one’s skin, an ice-cold drink becomes nothing short of a lifesaving "rain in time of drought." At the entrance of a barbecue shop in Hengyang County, Hengyang City, a thoughtful shop owner has quietly placed a "Community Care Fridge," offering free chilled beverages exclusively to outdoor workers such as sanitation staff and delivery riders. This heartfelt gesture brings much-needed relief to those laboring under the intense heat.

Noontime—the hottest part of the day—is also the busiest for food delivery riders. Braving the fierce sun, they weave through streets and alleys, racing against the clock to ensure meals reach customers on time. Liu Gangfeng, a post-90s delivery rider responsible for the New Era Plaza area, quickly noticed the fridge adorned with a "Free to Take" sign beside the plaza.

"Yesterday, while scrolling through Douyin, I saw that the ‘GeLiaHao’ Barbecue Shop had set up this caring fridge. Today, while delivering orders nearby, I decided to check it out. To my delight, there really were free chilled mineral water bottles! One sip instantly refreshed me," Liu said with a smile as he unscrewed a bottle cap.

The initiative was launched by Liu Zhongke, owner of a nearby late-night eatery. Opening his shop daily, he often witnesses sanitation workers, delivery riders, police officers, and others toiling under the relentless sun at the plaza—a sight that deeply moved him. "Under this extreme heat, so many frontline workers persevere here at Times Square. My heart goes out to them as they endure wind and sun while steadfastly serving our community," Liu shared. Inspired, he conceived the "Community Care Fridge" as a humble token of respect for their dedication.

"Don’t hesitate to take one—I only worry people might feel too shy to come!" Liu Zhongke remarked cheerfully. Each morning, he stocks the fridge with mineral water. As temperatures climb, the chilled drinks transform into the most considerate replenishment for weary workers. "I hope every delivery rider, ride-hailing driver, and street sweeper passing by will grab a bottle to cool down," he added.

Today, this small yet meaningful fridge has become a heartwarming symbol of summer compassion. Not only does it offer respite from the heat for outdoor laborers, but it also acts as a bridge conveying the city’s kindness and warmth—ensuring every hardworking individual feels the care and respect extended by strangers.
