In 1864 (the third year of Emperor Tongzhi in Qing Dynasty), the first Catholic Church in Hunan was built in Huangshawan outside the capital of Hengzhoufu (near Hengyang No.4 Middle School now). In 1900 (the twenty sixth year of Emperor Guangxu in Qing Dynasty), it was rebuilt in Juzi Sandbar across from Shigu Academy (beside Hengyang Infectious Diseases Hospital now). This church has been kept till now. In the 1990s, a new church was built near the old one. Now, Catholicism has been the 4th-largest religion of Hengyang.
